Every Smart TV sets aside part of its storage for what is known as cache – a space where apps store temporary data, loading information, and other files. While this is useful in everyday use, over time it can “bloat” and start to degrade your TV’s performance, making it feel slower. That’s why clearing your Smart TV cache periodically can make a noticeable difference.
Why You Should Keep an Eye on Your Smart TV Cache
Caching is used by almost all our devices, including smartphones and computers, and it’s a standard part of how they operate. Its primary job is to make the initial launch of your favorite apps faster and smoother.
However, when it comes to TVs, as time goes by, the Smart TV cache can build up and begin to negatively affect your device’s performance. And it’s not just about speed. If it stores outdated or corrupted data, some apps may crash, freeze, or refuse to work properly.
For instance, if you try to open an app and it constantly refuses to launch, the cache is often the culprit.

Over time, these cached files can become excessively large or develop errors, causing general slowdowns, random freezes, and an overall sluggish response from your TV. You’ll notice this most during:
- Turning the TV on
- Launching apps
- Navigating through menus
- Switching between apps
By clearing the cache you also free up valuable storage space, make software updates easier, and often gain enough room to install new apps.
In short, by clearing your Smart TV cache, you’re giving your TV a fresh start, allowing it to handle tasks more efficiently. This simple step can speed up everything from scrolling through apps to the initial startup after you power it on.
Important: Clearing the cache does not delete your apps, settings, or login details. All your essential information remains intact.
How to Clear Your Smart TV Cache
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to clear your TV’s cache easily and quickly.
All Smart TVs – Power Cycle / Soft Reset
The simplest way to clear the basic system cache on any Smart TV is to restart it with a soft reset (power cycle). This often fixes issues such as freezing, slow app loading, or sound/video glitches.

This method works on almost all brands (LG, Samsung, Sony, Philips, Hisense, etc.) and reloads the TV’s system without affecting your settings or installed apps.
Steps:
- Turn off the TV using the remote.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Press and hold the power button on the TV itself (not on the remote) for about 15–30 seconds to fully discharge the capacitors.
- Wait at least 60 seconds with the TV unplugged.
- Plug the power cord back in and turn the TV on.

Keep in mind that this kind of power cycle (soft reset) clears only the system’s temporary memory. It does not fully clear the individual app caches.
LG Smart TV and LG OLED
Newer LG Smart TVs include a built‑in Memory Optimizer tool, which clears temporary memory and closes background apps to improve overall performance.
This feature is mainly available on LG OLED TVs manufactured from 2021 onward. It’s designed to automatically optimize app performance and free up memory.
Typically, you’ll find it as follows (wording may vary slightly by model and region):
- Go to Settings
- Select All Settings
- Go to Support
- Choose Memory Optimizer (or similar)
- Select Start (or the equivalent action shown on your TV)

The TV will run a short process to shut down unnecessary background processes and clean the system cache.

Keep in mind that Memory Optimizer is not available on older LG models or some other LG series, such as QNED or NanoCell.
If your TV doesn’t have this specific built‑in tool, you’ll need to rely on manual methods: doing a soft reset and clearing each app’s cache separately where possible.
Samsung Smart TV and Samsung OLED
Samsung offers a similar feature on many of its Smart TVs from around 2020 and later, called Device Care. This scans the system, frees up Smart TV cache, closes apps running in the background, and optimizes the overall performance of the TV.

To run Device Care (names may differ slightly by model and software version):
- Press the Home button on the remote.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Support.
- Choose Device Care (or a similar option depending on the model).
- Select Start Device Care to begin the process.

On older Samsung models that don’t have Device Care, you’ll typically rely on the soft reset (power cycle) method described earlier.
Hisense TVs with VIDAA OS
On Hisense TVs running VIDAA OS, clearing the Smart TV cache is usually done through the main settings menu.
- Press the Home or Settings button on the remote.
- Go to Settings.
- Select System.
- Look for Application Settings or App Manager.
- Choose Clear Cache.

Your TV may ask you to confirm your choice, and once the process is complete, it may automatically restart.
Philips / Sony / Xiaomi / TCL – Android TV / Google TV
Most modern Smart TVs from brands like Philips, Sony, Xiaomi, TCL use Android TV or Google TV. This makes the cache clearing process very similar across these devices.
Clearing System‑Wide Cache (Android TV)
On almost all Android TV models, you can delete the system cache through the storage settings.
Typical steps:
- Press the Home or Settings button on the remote.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Device Preferences (or Device Settings, depending on the version).
- Go to Storage or Storage & Reset.
- Choose Internal shared storage (or equivalent).
- Select Free up storage (or Release storage space).
- Choose Clear cached data / Clear cache.

The naming may vary slightly, but the idea is the same: clear the cached data for the system.
Clearing Cache Per App (Android TV / Google TV)
This is the most commonly used method, as it targets only the app that’s causing problems (for example, Netflix, YouTube, etc.).
Steps:
- Open Settings (usually via the gear icon on the top or side menu).
- Go to Apps.
- If available, choose See all apps.
- Select the app whose cache you want to clear (e.g. Netflix).
- Choose Clear cache.
- Confirm with OK.
Warning: Do not select Clear storage, Clear data, or similar options unless you intentionally want to erase all of the app’s data, including login details and saved settings. Clearing storage will log you out and reset the app to its initial state.
Do You Regularly Check Your Smart TV Cache?
Clearing your TV’s cache is neither complicated nor risky. It’s a simple maintenance habit that can make a real difference in everyday use. With just a few steps, you can improve the speed, stability, and overall responsiveness of your Smart TV, and avoid freezing, buffering, or annoying app errors.
Whether you use built‑in tools, a simple power cycle, or app‑by‑app cache clearing, regularly checking your Smart TV cache helps keep your TV fast, reliable, and efficient for much longer.
