How often do you need to convert a file and end up wasting time digging for the right tool? This free, open-source File Converter makes the whole process effortless. Just right-click to convert PDFs to Word, switch formats for images, audio, or video, and forget about clunky settings and slow workflows.
The Best File Converter – Open Source
File Converter is a free, open-source app for Windows that lets you convert files straight from the right-click menu in File Explorer. No extra steps, no clutter—just fast, direct conversions exactly where you need them.
It supports a wide range of file formats, including images, videos, audio, and documents, making it a go-to solution for quick, everyday conversions without launching a separate app.
This lightweight open-source tool can be downloaded from its official website or directly from GitHub.

Setup is as simple as it gets: run the installer and follow the prompts. Once installed, File Converter automatically integrates into the right-click context menu. From there, you can instantly convert dozens of file types—images, audio, video, and documents—covering pretty much any daily conversion need.
How It Works
This lightweight, flexible tool integrates seamlessly into Windows, letting you convert files without opening any extra apps. To convert a file, simply right-click on it—whether it’s an image, video, document, or audio file.
Select Show more options > File Converter, choose your desired output format (such as MP4, JPG, MP3, or PDF), and the converted file will instantly appear in the same folder.

Need to handle multiple files? No problem. You can select several files at once and convert them all in a single step—fast and hassle-free.
Optional Features
While File Converter is built for simplicity, it also packs plenty of flexibility if you want more control over your conversions—especially useful when working with large batches of files.
You can fully customize conversion presets through File Converter Settings in the Start menu.

In the Conversion Presets tab, each conversion can be fine-tuned individually. You can rename presets, adjust scaling, and define naming patterns to keep your converted files clean and organized.

One particularly handy feature is the ability to decide what happens to the original file after conversion.
For example, you can set videos to be automatically deleted after converting them to MP4 to save space, while keeping your original audio files intact after converting them to MP3.
The best part? These rules can be configured separately for each format, giving you precise control over every workflow.

In the Application tab, you’ll find general settings like automatically closing the app after a conversion, copying files to the clipboard, or enabling/disabling hardware acceleration..
Next, let’s take a closer look at converting files into the most popular formats.
Convert PDF to Word
To convert Office document formats, you’ll need to have Microsoft Office installed and activated on your system.
File Converter supports a wide range of input formats, including:
doc, docx, odt, odp, ods, ppt, pptx, xls, xlsx, as well as image formats like arw, bmp, cr2, dds, dng, exr, heic, ico, jfif, jpg, jpeg, nef, png, psd, raf, svg, tif, tiff, tga, and webp. The output format, in this case, is PDF.

Once the conversion is complete, the new file will appear in the same folder as the original.

There’s also a useful To PNG (paged) option, which converts each page of your document into a separate PNG image—perfect for presentations or quick sharing.

Image Conversion
Image conversion works just as easily, following the same simple process.
File Converter supports a wide range of input formats, including:
arw, bmp, cr2, dds, dng, exr, heic, ico, jfif, jpg, jpeg, nef, png, psd, raf, svg, tif, tiff, tga, webp, as well as documents like pdf, doc, docx, odt, odp, ods, ppt, pptx, xls, and xlsx.
For output, you can convert your files into popular formats such as png, jpg, ico, and webp—covering most everyday needs for images and web use.

Video Conversion
Video conversion follows the exact same no-fuss approach.
File Converter supports a wide range of input formats, including:
3gp, 3gpp, avi, bik, flv, gif, m4v, mkv, mp4, mpg, mpeg, mov, ogv, rm, ts, vob, webm, and wmv.
For output, you can convert videos into formats such as webm, mkv, mp4, ogv, avi, and even gif—perfect for everything from playback compatibility to quick sharing.

Audio Conversion
Audio conversion follows the same logic as other file types.
Supported input formats include:
3gp, 3gpp, aac, aiff, ape, avi, bik, cda, flac, flv, gif, m4v, mkv, mp4, m4a, m4b, mp3, mpg, mpeg, mov, oga, ogg, ogv, opus, rm, ts, vob, wav, webm, wma, and wmv.
Available output formats are flac, aac, ogg, mp3, and wav.

For evaluating output quality, we used the Spek Acoustic Spectrum Analyzer. The analysis indicates that compressed formats such as OGG and AAC may exhibit some loss in high-frequency content, whereas WAV retains the full frequency range.

However, these differences are generally not perceptible to the human ear, particularly when higher bitrates are used.
Is This Open-Source File Converter Worth Using?
File Converter runs entirely offline, so your files never leave your system. It’s lightweight, fast, and skips the usual clutter of complicated menus and slow web-based tools.
Its tight integration with the Windows right-click menu makes it incredibly convenient, while still leveraging powerful processing methods under the hood for reliable performance.
There are a couple of trade-offs. Not all modern or niche codecs are supported (for example, HEVC/H.265), and converting PDFs from images can sometimes result in minor quality loss.
Still, for everyday use, it’s one of the most practical and efficient file conversion tools you can have.
