Unlike I don't care about cookies, this isn't just a cosmetic difference. Rather than dismissing consent prompts as quickly as possible, Consent-O-Matic is designed to make privacy-focused choices whenever it interacts with a cookie banner.
Its philosophy is simple: if the extension can't identify the ideal option with certainty, it defaults to the choice that offers the strongest privacy protection. In most cases, that means rejecting tracking and other non-essential cookies by default.
To get started, visit the Consent-O-Matic GitHub page, click the button for your preferred browser, and you'll be taken to the appropriate extension store to install it.
Right after installation, Consent-O-Matic asks you to configure how you want it to handle consent requests. These settings are based on six consent categories identified through the analysis of hundreds of cookie consent forms:
- Preferences and Functionality
- Performance and Analytics
- Information Storage and Access
- Content Selection, Delivery, and Reporting
- Ad Selection, Delivery, and Reporting
- Other Purposes
If you leave all options disabled, Consent-O-Matic will do its best to reject all non-essential cookie requests while preserving your privacy as much as possible.
Next, open the "Display" section and choose whether you want to see a small window showing the cookie-processing actions performed by Consent-O-Matic, or keep the process hidden.
Finally, go to the "Rule Lists" tab and click "Update Rules Now" to refresh the rule database, allowing the extension to recognize newer consent management platforms that appear across the web.
This step is only necessary after the initial installation, as the extension automatically updates its rule lists every 22 to 48 hours.
Consent-O-Matic relies on a strict set of rules maintained by a community of privacy contributors. It comes with built-in support for major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, AliExpress, and Etsy, as well as consent systems commonly used by news sites, e-commerce stores, and corporate websites.
For users who want even more control, Consent-O-Matic allows the creation of custom rules to block specific cookies and other types of data collection.
Advanced users can also create their own rules through a drag-and-drop editor, which separates the process into two parts: "detectors" that identify consent banners and "methods" that define how the extension interacts with them.
The editor includes ready-made templates for dozens of platforms, with each rule defining how the extension behaves: which buttons to click, which fields to modify, and in what order the actions should be performed.
As an open-source project, Consent-O-Matic continues to evolve through contributions from the privacy community. New rules and improvements are constantly added, helping the extension support even complex or less common consent management platforms over time.
