Facebook Safety Check for the Paris Terror Attacks
To mark yourself safe if you are in Paris or check about the safety of your Facebook friends, you just need to visit:
If you are in the affected area, just click on the "Yes, let my friends know" link.
On the bottom of the page, we will find the names of our Facebook friends that are in Paris and their status. We can leave a comment for any of them. If we know that someone is safe, but they haven't marked themselves so for any reason, we can mark them ourselves.
From the dropdown menu, we can choose the view, to see either only the friends who are safe or those that haven't checked in yet.
Of course, if one or more friends of ours in Paris haven't checked in, it doesn't mean anything. They probably haven't logged in Facebook yesterday or today. There is no need to think of the worst.
How was Safety Check created
Facebook Safety Check went live in October 2014.
It all started with the catastrophic Japan tsunami of 2011, which affected more than 12.5 million people nationwide, and more than 400,000 people were evacuated. The Facebook engineers in Japan took the first step, creating the Disaster Message Board, to help the communication during an emergency situation.
One year later the first test of this new tool was ready, and by late 2014 Safety Check was available for all users.
When Safety Check is activated by Facebook, it will automatically send a notification to every Facebook user who is at the affected area, based on their account information.
It is a simple and effective tool, which is way better than looking for our friends' profiles and status updates.
