Facebook can be a tremendous waste of time. It's also a good way to keep in touch with our friends. If we want to Facebook chat without the newsfeed distractions, the Facebook owned messenger.com allows us to chat outside of Facebook.com.

How to use Facebook chat outside of Facebook
Messenger might allow us to use Facebook chat outside of Facebook, but we still need a Facebook account, no way around that.
Having a Facebook account, we just need to visit https://www.messenger.com/.
A look at the certificate information ensures that this is a legitimate website, owned by Facebook, and not any phishing attempt.
We should never enter our Facebook account information on a third-party site. The legitimate pop-ups to connect with Facebook are always on the Facebook website.
After logging in, we have instant access to the Facebook chat.
On the left-hand column, we will find our Facebook friends. The center column has our latest chat. On the right, we can mute notifications for a particular contact, and quickly visit their Facebook profile.
With the upper right icons, we can add an extra person to a discussion, start a voice or video call, and hide the right-hand information column.
We can also attach files and pictures, and enter emoticons, stickers, etc. like at the regular Facebook chat.
Messenger's settings are a bit sparse. We can turn off the sound, and turn on desktop notifications, but we can't do anything more than that.
There is no "appear offline" option like we will find in Skype or other messaging apps.
We can't log in through mobile to the website, though, to Facebook chat without an app. We need to install the Messenger app from iTunes and Google Play.
Will you be using the Messenger website for Facebook chat?
Do you mostly use Facebook for chatting, and you don't care much about the newsfeed? Or do you prefer to Facebook chat while browsing Facebook, and for you messenger.com is useless?
